May

I didn't buy makeup as much, but had to acquire my first more expensive sunscreen. I didn't read much this month again, unfortunately.

Cała Polska Trzaska

A 2005 collections of reportages from Wyborcza, all published between 2001-2005 - the era just right after turn of the millennium and before access to EU - last vestiges of transformation era and it's specifics.

The book collects 23 pieces by 24 authors - topics span wide range, from historical (Bedzies Wisioł za Cósi - about Goralenvolk, the failed attempt of pro-German górals to collaborate with Nazi Germany based on fake mythology claiming that Polish highlanders actually descend from germanic tribes), one about Irena Sendler (Lista Sendlerowej) to current affairs and culture. It also contains two very significant pieces from this period - Łowcy Skór (Skin Hunters) from 2002 which broke news about decade long scheme between funeral houses and emergency medical services in Łódź where in exchange of money, EMTs didn't help people they were called to or outright killed them*. Other one is Na Bałutach jeszcze Polska about Blokersi (aka dresiarze) subculture.

It also contains one more reportage I actually did read - "Plastików nie wpuszczamy" about door selection in clubs, which came to the country with Piekarnia nightclub (c. 2001 it was shilled in Brit alternative circuit cool media and generally it's interesting case of both Polish Anglophilia and new Brit craze about Eastern Europe at once). There were other interesting pieces in the book - like Cała Polska Trzaska (from which name of the collection is taken) about elaborate insurance scams, "Na Rusztach Łóżek" about a most likely planned fire of psychiatric hospital or Podwójne Życie Don Juana about a rich Polonia activist in South America who turned out to be a Nazi collaborator.

They all are written in tone of old-school Wyborcza when it was more lib, more libcath newspaper with faint progressive streak - more toned down and nuanced than modern iteration of this rag. I was surprised that one reportage on advertising executives from 2001 didn't make into the collection - even if it was a real piece of that period. I wish that more pieces on our noveau riche were included to balance everything out.

Basiclab Normalizing Cleansing Gel

I almost ran out from my Bioderma cleanser and my previous Clarins one was also gone, I was thinking about buying one from Clinique but I was short on money back then so I decided to try Basiclab - which is a subject of hype on my country's part of social media. It's a Polish brand and prices are midrange to high, but this one was fairly cheap for amount (300ml) and formula. It's great for removing makeup and it cleanses face without leaving it too dry. Thanks to active ingridients my face finally started to clear out after such long time. I'll probably rebuy it until my face becomes completely clean - additionally bottle with a pump is very comfortable to use.

Clarins Youth Protecting Sunscreen SPF50+

Unfortunately, thanks to an unplaned visit and spending lot of time outdoors I got burnt on my face and arms - so I finally got new sunscreen. I was trying to find a mineral one I planned to get but unfortunately local Sephora and Douglas didn't have exact brand I wanted, instead I settled on chemical one from Clarins. Since Clarins can get questionble skincare ingridients (like alcohol in moisturizers and lots of perfume) it turned out to be pretty gentle and not as perfumed as other cosmetics from them I tried. It's pretty sticky if applied thickly, but after all it dries down well - I don't think I'd use it under makeup though, since when I wear makeup I spend most of time indoors. Unfortunately, as it's chemical sunscreen I have to be careful with white clothes as it stains them yellow...

* 6 years later, a documentary on this topic was made - it had to be made in Sweden, as many people related to whole ordeal would make it impossible to make it in Poland.
